    A molecular thermometer based on luminescence of copper(II) tetraphenylporphyrin

    The photoluminescence (PL) spectra from solid samples consisting of polystyrene and 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine copper(II) (CuTPP) revealed two sharp peaks at 653 and 720 nm, and indicated another broad peak at around 780 nm, which could not be observed in CuTPP solutions. The intensity ratio of the two peaks appearing at 653 nm and at around 780 nm demonstrated clear dependence on temperature. This dependence of the PL intensity ratio was observed under the atmosphere and even in water. The findings mean that we were able to utilize PL from CuTPP as a thermometer under various conditions. We measured the temperatures of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) during operation based on its electroluminescence, where the OLED contained CuTPP as a light-emitting dopant, to demonstrate the CuTPP thermometer.ArticleThin Solid Films. 518(2):563-566 (2009)journal articl

    Bi- or ter-pyridine tris-substituted benzenes as electron-transporting materials for organic light-emitting devices

    We demonstrated that 1,3,5-tris([2',2 '']bipyridin-6'-yl) benzene (BpyB) and 1,3,5-tris([ 2',2 '',6 '',2''']terpyridin-6'-yl)benzene (TpyB) are good electron-transport (ET) layer materials for organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). The new materials exhibit high electron mobilities of around 10 (4) cm(2) V (1) s (1), and OLEDs comprising the materials operate at lower voltage than the OLEDs with tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Alq) as an ET material. The new materials are also useful for phosphorescent OLEDs in blue-, green-, and red-light-emitting devices, where they function as both electron-transporting and hole-blocking materials. Phosphorescent OLEDs with the new materials operate at lower voltage (while maintaining comparable external quantum efficiencies of electroluminescence) than does the corresponding reference device with bathocuproine/Alq as electron-transporting and hole-blocking layers.ArticleORGANIC ELECTRONICS. 11(12):1966-1973 (2010)journal articl

    Role of intron 1 in smooth muscle α-actin transcriptional regulation in activated mesangial cells in vivo.BackgroundThe activation of glomerular mesangial cells is one of the early, important features of progressive glomerular disease. Smooth muscle α-actin (SMαA) is an excellent marker of activated mesangial cells. However, the mechanisms of SMαA regulation are only available from in vitro investigation.MethodsWe examined in vivo promoter analysis of the SMαA gene-utilizing transgenic mice harboring different promoter regions of the SMαA gene fused to chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT). CAT activities were tested in primary cultured mesangial cells and in glomerular legions of Habu venom glomerulonephritis.ResultsThe DNA sequence -891 to +3828, which contains exon 1, intron 1, and the first 14bp of exon 2 in addition to the 5′-flanking sequence of the SMαA gene, induced high levels of transcription in activated mesangial cells in in vivo habu venom glomerulonephritis and in cultured mesangial cells derived from transgenic mice. The DNA region -891 to -124 was a positive element in mesangial cells derived from transgenic mice. Deletions (3316 or 137bp) in intron 1 reduced transcription to undetectable levels. The 137bp sequence is highly conserved among several species, containing one CArG box element, which is one of the key motifs for transcriptional activation of contractile-related proteins. In vitro transfection analysis failed to demonstrate these positive effects of intron 1 and region -891 to -124.ConclusionsIn vivo promoter analysis of the SMαA gene provided new information about the transcriptional regulation of SMαA in activated mesangial cells. The DNA region -891 to -124 has a positive effect on SMαA transcription in cultured mesangial cells. The intron 1 region (+1088 to +1224) plays a pivotal role in SMαA transcription in activated mesangial cells in vivo. Further analysis of this conserved region in intron 1, including the CArG motif, will be of great value in understanding the molecular mechanisms of mesangial activation

    Thin-film and single-crystal transistors based on a trifluoromethyl-substituted alternating (thiophene/phenylene)-co-oligomer

    We demonstrated the performance of thin-film transistors (TFTs) and single-crystal field-effect transistors (FETs) based on a trifluoromethyl-substituted alternating (thiophene/phenylene)-co-oligomer (AC5-CF3), 1,4-bis(5'-(4 ''-trifluoromethylphenyl)thiophene-2'-yl) benzene. An FET with a fine AC5-CF3 single-crystal demonstrated field-effect mobility as high as 3.1 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). This value implies that AC5-CF3 must be a useful n-type organic semiconducting material. The performance of AC5-CF3 TFTs depended on the substrate temperatures at which AC5-CF3 thin films were deposited. From the viewpoint of mobility, threshold voltage and sub-threshold slope, we obtained the highest performance at the substrate temperature of 100 degrees C. This was because a higher substrate temperature for deposition enlarged the size of grains in AC-CF3 thin films and improved the characteristics of grain boundaries. However, 120 degrees C depositions of AC5-CF3 induced deep valley-like cracks in the thin films, probably because of the difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion for AC5-CF3 thin films and silicon wafer substrates, resulting in effects such as worsening mobility. AC5-CF3 TFTs prepared at 100 degrees C deposition showed no channel length dependence of the field-effect mobility, and their average field-effect mobility was 0.55 +/- 0.05 cm(2) V-1 s(-1).ArticleOrganic Electronics. 11(9):1549-1554 (2010)journal articl

    Laparoscopic Resection of a Primary Retroperitoneal Mucinous Cystadenoma

    Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma (PRMC) is a rare cystic lesion occurring mostly in women with a histological analogy to ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. The tumor is difficult to detect during early stages because it causes symptoms only when it grows large enough to be palpable or to displace the adjacent internal organs. The primary treatment is resection, but the optimal surgical approach remains poorly known. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman who complained of right-sided intermittent abdominal pain. Imaging studies revealed a right retroperitoneal smooth cystic lesion (50 mm) without invasive features. Laparoscopic resection was then performed. During surgery, a right retroperitoneal mass with no connection to neighboring tissues was found. The tumor, wrapped by retroperitoneal fat tissue, was resected and removed from the body without exposure. Furthermore, histopathological findings indicated PRMC. The patient was discharged without any complications and observed to have no recurrence 6 months postoperatively

    Laparoscopic Resection of an Abdominal Wall Metastasis 5 Years after Primary Colorectal Cancer Resection

    We report the case of a 65-year-old male with a metachronous abdominal wall metastasis secondary to colorectal cancer. The patient had presented 5 years ago to another facility with a perforated sigmoid colon cancer (pT4a[SE], N0, M0, pStage II), rectal cancer (T2[MP], N0, M0, pStage I), and Fournier gangrene. He had then undergone sigmoidectomy and rectal resection along with S-1 adjuvant chemotherapy. No relapse was observed thereafter. However, currently, 5 years after initial surgery, the patient noticed a palpable mass in the left lower abdomen and was referred to our hospital for further assessment and treatment. Percutaneous echo-guided needle biopsy of the tumor revealed an adenocarcinoma tissue. Following 6 courses of FOLFOX plus cetuximab chemotherapy, laparoscopic resection for abdominal wall metastasis was successfully performed. The resected tissue was pathologically characterized as adenocarcinoma, which was compatible with the recurrence of the primary colorectal carcinoma resected 5 years ago. The abdominal wall metastasis was attributed to the cancer cell implantation secondary to the perforated sigmoid colon cancer treated 5 years ago

    Late Cutaneous Metastasis Originating from Gastric Cancer with Synchronous Metastasis

    An 89-year-old man was diagnosed with late cutaneous metastasis in the right axilla 6 years after undergoing a surgery for gastric cancer with synchronous cutaneous metastasis in the same site. The patient became aware of small reddish nodules in the right axilla, and computed tomography imaging showed an irregular thickening of the right axillary skin. No other sign of recurrence was observed. By en-bloc resection, the nodules were diagnosed as late cutaneous metastasis from gastric cancer. The patient received no additional postoperative chemo- or radiotherapy and was only carefully observed. Cutaneous metastases from gastric cancer have a high recurrence rate even if total resection with no residual cancer is achieved. Therefore, meticulous follow-up, including routine visual inspection, is required for the early detection of late cutaneous metastases
